If you’re on Soundcloud you must be familiar with Boston producer/dj Noms. There’s not a month without at least one or two releases, so it’s safe to say this talent is very productive. For this weeks Guest Flakes we interviewed him and he came up with an awesome guest mix.

What he’s bringing to the table in this one? Oh man. Bass, (Future) Trap, UK, RnB, Juke and Pandas, loads of Pandas. Fux wiv it, lawl. Enjoy your weekend!

INTERVIEW

BF: Fernando what’s good?! For those who don’t know, who is Noms?

N0: Chillin like a villain… Noms is essentially what I go by when I put out my tracks, but really I just ghost produce for a panda called noms.

BF: You make tunes in a huge variety of styles. There’s some traditional Hip Hop beats, Juke/ Footwork, Bass etc etc. Where do you get your inspiration from?

N0: I like to make all kinds of music, it’s really the only way to keep growing as a producer. I get my inspiration from anything really, I get in weird obsessive phases where I’ll find someone new that I like and I’ll just have their music on repeat.

BF: We’ve always felt like you’re one of the most productive and active producers out there. At least, you’ve amazed us quite some times with multiple releases in A WEEK.

N0: Thanks guys <3 I try to keep it 100

BF: What can we expect from you the upcoming months? Any EP’s or dope gigs planned?

N0: You can definitely expect to catch me at shows around you, maybe West Coast. Next to that I’ve been working on my RAW records EP for a minute now, I wanna have a solid release my montreal homies can jam to.

BF: You’ve been producing your tracks with Ableton Live. What we really like about this program is that every producer seems to have a totally different way of building up their tracks within Live. Are you more of an an “Arrangement View-” or “Session View-producer”, or what’s your perfect set up?

N0: All about that arrangement view life. With the glow in the dark ableton color scheme for good looks.

BF: Where did your Panda fetish come from?

N0: From the panda sneezing youtube video.

BF: Have you ever heard of Panda licorice? You should try those things, they are addictive as hell.

N0: That sounds amazing… very down for panda licorice as long as its not panda flavored.

BF: Anyways, thanks a bunch for the exclusive mix! Any last words or shout outs?

N0: Thank you for having me!!! I wanna s/o my brick bandits fam for the support and love, my homies in montreal, to all my waifs out there str8 hustlin’, and all the upcoming soundcloud homies, I see u.

Dutch producer deeB recently released his newest EP on Dusted Wax Kingdom. After his first EP called Daydream he made a selection of more organic/natural beats.

Last year deeB played on the little stage Beatflakes hosted on Solar Festival. Simply because we knew this guy had some amazing tunes that are perfect to relax to in combination with some sunshine and a few beers. So when we heard about this new album we knew it couldn’t disappoint us. And it didn’t.

It contains 9 beats so I’d rather approach this as being an album rather than an EP. These laidback tracks are built up from some lovely ingredients, including classic drumpatterns and good use of different dreamy synths and instruments, creating a sound to chill to.

If you dig tunes from guys like Madlib and need tunes for the upcoming summer, you will definitely appreciate this. You can download the full EP over here, and guess what, it’s totally FREE.

Below a few of my personal favorites:

Patterns In Plastic have always crossed genres with previous tracks like Ballons Don’t Always Fly, and Don’t You Ever is no exception. With the help of Paris-based electronic wonder Andrea. Taking lyrics from Chelsea Wolfe’s “Movie Screen” and Motorcycle’s “As The Rush Comes”, Patterns In Plastic create a mashup of lyrics sung instead of sampling.

We can only wait to hear the forthcoming EP titled A Slow Death.

Luuk Graham, The Hague native drops his second release with Lowriders Recordings. After his recent remixes, a beattape and some digi releases finally the Poly EP is ready for the public ear. The sound has grown in depth and strength. Inspired by UK bass and the Dirty South HipHop scene, he fits in the hip trap/bass culture with his more uptempo tracks but as easily links to the more head-hop tunes as you’d expect from guys like Shlohmo.

To me personally FilosofischeStilte’s tracks sound like you’ve just got dragged in to a cave where you have to listen to filthy Trap/Bass inspired tracks that, because of the huge space, cause tons of reverb, creating a quite unique spacey, almost psychedelic sound. His track “Gold Dust” is probably a good example of what I’m talking about. There’s beautiful details in the tracks and it’s definitely something new and fresh.

Make sure to check out the full EP, and if you’re digging it you can even buy the GOLD 7 inch vinyl in black sleeve with sticker. Cray.

Oh and btw, we’ve got a little exclusive on here as well. FilosofischeStilte’s VIP version of “SpaceGoldSwagTrillaNigga”. Big tune, check it out!

XILS-Lab

XILS-lab is a French company that creates music software. They believe that a virtual effect or instrument is not only a mathematical algorithm, designed by and for PhD engineers, but a musical instrument designed for musicians.

Throughout the years they’ve developed an interesting range of Synthesizers and Effects that are all well affordable.

OXIUM and Updates

Oxium (€99) is a performance oriented synthesizer, offering both a classic pure analog sound and modern tones. with awesome real time modulations capabilities, allowing you to play a synthesizer in ways you could never have imagined.

For this update they’ve added quite a lot of new features. Not just new presets, but they’ve also implemented more than 10 modulation targets, they’ve added extra mask envelopes and new Masks Handling Functions.

Check out the complete list of (new) features over here.

HOW IS IT?

I must admit I’m not the most technical producer around so when I see a plugin that offers tons of knobs you can twist I get quite overwhelmed. I’ve learned what most knobs mean from other VST’s I’ve been using in the past but since every plug-in is different it always takes time to figure it out. As I really don’t feel like studying or reading full manuals I’ve become more of a Trial and Error kind of guy. Play around for a few hours and you’ll find out which knobs and settings improve a preset you’ve choosen to start with.

Here comes the good part, OXIUM has a lot of great presets to work with. The “LEADS” are amazing (seriously, LD Prepared Brass is amazing for all HipHop producers, it’s so aggressive), as well as the “FX’s” (great noisy sounds with some reverb to them that would work great for drops, birdges and whatnot). Of course the other categories have some great presets too, definitely worth checking out.

In the video below we’ll briefly show how one of the “LEADS” sounds and how you can easily tweek and modulate it for your beat. Again, just for learning purposes, not meant to be a good beat, cause it’s not ;).

WORTH BUYING?

This is always a difficult question to answer. Every producer has his/her own way of working, we all have different VST’s, different DAW’s and different goals. But in general all styles of producers would be very happy with this plugin; it has tons of features and there’s loads of great sounding presets in all music styles (from Ambient to Dubstep).

The only thing we really didn’t like about this VST is the fact that there’s not a Preset Overview. There’s just a drop down menu with quite a lot of submenu’s so it can be hard trying to re-find that one sound you loved so much last time you were using Oxium. But hey, if that’s all the negative things we can say about it, it must be good right?

If you’re interested, you can check it out here.

You’ve already seen the image above so you know what time it is! This weeks Guest Flakes is hosted by French producer Neptune Safari. Believe me, this is something totally different than the things you’ve heard in the last few Guest Flakes. First few mins you’ll just relax and start smiling, then your feet will instantly follow your mind. Yep, this is bound to make you dance.

INTERVIEW

BF: Hi Neptune Safari, what’s going on?

NS: Hello Beatflakes, before we start, I want to thank you for your interest in my work!

BF: You first release popped up somewhere in March and was a big success, which wasn’t as surprise as it was a lovely Nu-disco tune. Since then you’ve released 2 more tracks, however, you’re still a mystery to most of our readers. Who is Neptune Safari?

NS: Neptune Safari is a 24 music buff adventurer named Dorian. The project Neptune Safari began to grow in my head two years ago. The idea started as somewhat of a jigsaw puzzle, then became a reality when the puzzle was finally assembled in March. Neptune Safari is a passion I want to share and what I need to produce. In a way Neptune Safari is an extension of who I am.

BF: Your tracks definitely sound professional, which makes it obvious you have a (large) background in music. What are some other projects you have worked on in the past?

NS: Basically, I am a musician with various influences. I come from a family of music lovers. I always had musical instruments in hand, and I quickly started playing other people’s music before composing myself. I worked on different kinds of music to improve my skills before focusing on what I really like.

BF: You’re located in Paris, France. How has this influenced your sound and what artists have had the largest inspiration for you?

NS: Actually my spaceship had an engine failure over Paris, so I was forced to make an emergency landing… It’s very different from my hometown but still a very pleasant city. I moved since. About the artists that influenced me, the list would be too long to name them, but if I had to talk about THE trigger, it would be « Fred Falke & Alan Braxe – Intro ».

BF: Your music really wants us to chill out in the sun with a few beers. Speaking of which, any cool gigs or festivals planned for this summer?

NS: At the moment I just compose and remix songs that I love. I like the idea of a live in the future, why not. However, there is nothing in sight yet.

BF: What can we expect from you in the rest of this year?

NS: Other productions, new remixes, I might also work with artists I like, fix my engines…

BF: When can we get an exclusive tour through your spaceship?

NS: Next Saturday, 8pm, bring friends, beers and let’s go!

BF: Thanks a bunch for your Guest Flakes, we love it. Any last words or shout outs?

NS: You’re welcome it was a pleasure! Keep up the great work and see you soon (:

The Swede Walter Berge is the wizard behind the alias: Mercimer. He recently released his newest piece of work, Leagues EP on norwegian record-label “A New Direction Music”. It consists of 6 tracks and is available via iTunes and Beatport.

“The essence of a track is the most important factor. Rhythm, melody, and sounds are all subordinate to the feeling a track carries. I don’t make songs quickly. I listen to them incessantly in order to find which details can be tweaked in service of the tune.“

The sounds that interest Mercimer the most are the ones where organic and electronic meet. Every sound needs a little bit of ugly. Every rhythm needs to get knocked about. In order to achieve this, he uses a lot of sampling, choosing tiny slivers of a recording and manipulating them into new instruments and environments. He also records live instruments to combine with electronic soundscapes.

“I wouldn’t call myself a perfectionist though. If I get it right, I want the track to describe a feeling so intense that it envelopes the listener.“

One of the songs we really like from this EP is the Electro-Pop tune called “Walk At Night (ft. Lisa Gagerman)”. Lisa definitely has a great voice and Mercimer did an awesome job sampling and chopping up parts creating a very interesting sound.

 https://soundcloud.com/anewdirection1/mercimer-feat-lisa-gagerman

It’s a complete different sound if you’d compare it to the second and fourth track off the EP, which have that typical Future Garage flow to them. These tunes just sound crisp and feel like they’ve been mastered slightly better in comparison to tracks like “I’m a Saw”.

 https://soundcloud.com/anewdirection1/mercimer-nomenou

In general this is a lovely EP and it’s definitely worth buying a few of the tunes. We’re curious to see what Mercimer will come up with in the near future, as this is a promising producer for sure. Give the guy a like on Soundcloud and Facebook!

Everything good about the modern age of music-making is encompassed in this track: kids in their bedrooms splicing together samples to create technically flawed but sonically beautiful compositions. The EP this was taken from can be downloaded from Lucian’s Bandcamp for free and features another cut with Rosebud Leach providing vocals. Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.
