Unless your music is so unique that we instantly want to write about it, you need to step up your promotion game.
Make it easy for blogs to write about your music. Don’t just send us a link to your “new tune” on Soundcloud. Give us a little more, here’s 5 simple tips on how to get things going:
02. HOOK US UP WITH A PRESS PIC
03. BE PERSONAL
04. BE GENEROUS
1. WRITE A LITTLE BIO ABOUT YOURSELF
Who are you? What do you produce? Why do you produce? Genres? Inspiration? Please don’t turn this into a story of 500 words, but just a few lines with the essence of your background is fine.
2. HOOK US UP WITH A NICE, HI-RES PRESS PIC
We hardly ever receive e-mails with photos / artwork. And if we do, it’s mostly a snapshot created with an iPhone 3. Nowadays everyone knows someone with a good DSLR camera, so use it! Let a friend make a picture of you in your studio, in the forest whatever. Dress up how you want to, we don’t care if you’re wearing a clown suit, as long as it’s a sweet picture it’s all good.
If you have slim to none experience with Photoshop, please stay away from all the weird filters, it mostly looks like shit. We don’t even mind doing some small color corrections on “OK” pics.
3. BE PERSONAL
We like personal messages.
It’s always better to receive messages starting with “Hi Beatflakes Crew, I’m absolutely loving your latest article on how to promote yourself…” rather than “Dear Blogger…“.
In other words, try to create lasting connections instead of spamming your work over and over again. Get a conversation started!
Oh and if being ignorant, please DO use “BCC” when mailing all your favorite blogs at once.
4. BE GENEROUS
When starting out, be generous! Make it easy for bloggers and music lovers to get your music. Enable free downloads or include a download link for bloggers in your e-mail. Blogs often have a great network of other artists and DJ’s, it would be sweet if they would play your track somewhere right? Don’t worry too much about not getting money. Let the word spread first.
Of course you can’t give away every track as an exclusive, but this can definitely make it more interesting for blogs to push your track. Again, this is why step 3 is so important. Stay connected.
